The CAAD9 5 has a different kind of aluminum frame than the Synapse 5. Both bikes have the Shimano 105 component set which makes upgrading much easier in the future. You will find both of these bikes are great entry level bikes. It will depend on which one handles better for you when you ride it, on which works best for you. The more expensive ones come with carbon fiber frames and better components, shifts better and weighs less. The less expensive ones come with aluminum frames and less expensive components, they do not shift as well and they weigh more. The components are much more difficult to upgrade because of compatibility problems with the higher quality components. This is the reason it will cost you more if you do not get a component set with 10 speeds in the back and want to upgrade later.
