How to change a bicycle tire is an important skill to know.
It comes in very handy when you are out riding and you get a flat.
Changing a flat tire is easy and straight forward when you have the proper tools.
The tools needed are some tire tools, an air pump and patch kit.
Tire tools are about 6 inches long. They usually come in a set of 3.
They have a hook at one to loop around the spokes. On the other end there is a small lip used to pry the tire over the rim.
To change your tire you first need to take it off of the bicycle. From there you need to make sure all of the air is out of the tube, makes it easier to get everything off.
Nextyou take one of the tire tools and pry the tire over the rim. Some times this will take two tire tools.
Next you take the third/second tire tool and run it around the rim between the tire and the rim. This is to fully disengage one side of the tire from the rim.
Once one side of the tire is pried from the rim it is time to remove the tube.
Once the tube is removed run your fingers around the inside of the tire.
This is to check for thorns or anything that might puncture the tube again.
With the tube out put a pump or two of air in the tube and check for where it is leaking. The best way is to run your fingers slowly over the tube.
Once you have located the leak, rough up the tube around the leak with sand paper or something similar. The size of the roughed up area should be roughly the size of a quarter.
Apply some glue to the area, you just roughed up. Let it dry for a few minutes and then apply the patch. Press the patch on firmly and be sure to get the edges down securely.
If you do not get the edges down well the patch will probably not hold long term.
Reinsert the tube into the tire, stem first. Push the tire back into place on the rim. Make sure the tube does not get pinched between the tire and the rim.
Put the rim/tire back on the bike and inflate to proper pressure. You have now learned how to change a bicycle tire. The video below is a visual of how to change a bicycle tire.
Once one side of the tire is pried from the rim it is time to remove the tube.
