Road Bike Races - "Knowing How-To Be Safe And Have Fun."

Road bike races are a great way to raise funds for charity and improve your abilities!

You can also pass off requirements for your professional cycling license by riding in bicycle races.

You can meet new people to ride with in your area!

Things to Know to Have A Safe and Fun Race

Some of the basics to be ready for a race are:
  • getting plenty of rest the night before
  • eat a meal which is high in carbs
  • prepare a few weeks in advance for whatever distance your riding (particularly important for longer distances around 100 miles or longer)
  • drink plenty of liquids the day before and during your event
road bike racesThe first race I ever rode in was a 100+ mile race.

Due to road construction the race did not start off as fast as it normally does.

Because of the slower start the main peloton/pack had many more people in it than normal.

With more congestion in the peloton, about 25 miles into the race there was a pile-up crash in front of me.

My bike went over on its side and I got a little scrapped up. Immediately I got back on my bike and went to take off again.

I soon found out my road bike frame got bent at the rear derailleur. This bend in the frame made my chain out of alignment.

I was out of the race due to my bike being inoperative.

When I got to the finish line the man who finished the race first gave me a tip on how to avoid peloton pile-ups.

He told me when riding in a peloton to stay to the outside of the group.

Doing this allows you room to get out of the way of crashes.

road bike racesAnother thing when you are riding with a group is...

take your turn when it is your time to lead.

Other riders appreciate it when you contribute to the group.

It makes for a better functioning group.

When you take your turn in the front it gives everyone else a chance to rest.

Where to Find a Race?

There is probably a race sometime during the year in your area.

It will probably be easier for you to find a "charity ride" than a sanctioned race.

A charity ride is a ride where the proceeds benefit a charity such as the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.

A sanctioned race is where you have official time keepers and there is prize money to be won.

You can find road bike races in your area by contacting you local bike club or bike shop.

You can also ask others you ride with.

There are also many websites which list cycling race events, such as Velonews.

Velonews mostly has sanctioned events instead of recreational/charity events.

Mycyclingsource.com is going to be sponsoring some events this year in the following states:
Where ever you live and whatever road bike races you participate in, make it as enjoyable as possible...
